Lantern Club is a proud sponsor of many sporting clubs, and lawn bowls in particular is a sport close to our hearts. We’d love you to meet and get to know our Roselands bowling ladies, the Flames. We asked Roseland Flames’ lady bowlers ten questions and here is what they told us:

  1. How long have you been bowling at Roselands?  33 years
  2. How long have you been bowling? 36 years
  3. Name: Trudiann Flack
  4. How did you start playing lawn bowls? My father, a lawn bowls coach, watched me play in a tennis final. He suggested that I would never achieve any great heights at tennis and I should try lawn bowls. It took me 16 years, but I won the state singles and played for NSW for five years.
  5. What do you love about playing at Lantern Club? The friendship and camaraderie amongst the ladies. The club is also very competitive.
  6. What is your greatest memory of playing at Roselands? A day held to celebrate me winning the 2002 state singles. A game of bowls and lunch attended by my friends and family.
  7. If you could form a lawn bowls team with any three people (living or dead), who would they be and why? Dorothy Roach OAM, the best lawn bowler I have played with or against. She won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Gwen Wilson, my mother. A former state player. Karen Murphy, current Australian player.
  8. What is your favourite food and/or drink to order at Lantern Club? Baked lamb and vegetables and a flat white coffee.
  9. If you were the winner of Lantern Club’s Members Jackpot (currently $18,000), what would you spend it on? A cruise from Broome to Darwin.
  10. What is your favourite saying or the best advice that you’ve ever been given? “Win with humility. Lose with grace. Do both with dignity”.

Cheryle

  1. Name: Cheryle Trikeriotis
  2. How long have you been bowling? About 10 years
  3. How long have you been bowling at Roselands? Since 2009 when Punchbowl bowling amalgamated with Roselands bowling.
  4. How did you start playing lawn bowls? My mother and I went to an open day at Punchbowl Diggers bowling club. I joined up to play after this fun day.
  5. What do you love about playing at Lantern Club? All the friendly ladies of the Roselands Flames women’s bowling club as well as the good relationship with the men’s club for joint social games. Our facilities are excellent and staff are welcoming in the bar and in MàZi restaurant.
  6. What is your greatest memory of playing at Roselands? A great year in 2016 when the ladies bowling club won most of the district events and sent a team to the state playoff. I was privileged to be in this winning team and be president during this year.
  7. If you could form a lawn bowls team with any three people (living or dead), who would they be and why? Dawn Fraser, she’s a sporting leader. Barry Humphries/Dame Edna Everage, he’d be good social fun for mixed days! Karen Murphy, it’d be great to play with a bowls champion.
  8. What is your favourite food and/or drink to order at Lantern Club? A latte or iced coffee and the chicken schnitzel and chips.
  9. If you were the winner of Lantern Club’s Members Jackpot (currently $18,000), what would you spend it on? A holiday to Canada, Alaska and Greece.
  10. What is your favourite saying or the best advice that you’ve ever been given? Stay positive in life. “The moving finger writes; and, having writ, moves on. Nor all thy piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all thy tears wash.” Edward Fitzgerald’s translation of the poem The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam, 1859.

  4. How did you start playing lawn bowls? My husband talked me into it after tennis.
  5. What do you love about playing at Lantern Club? The nice company.
  6. What is your greatest memory of playing at Roselands? Winning the singles.
  7. If you could form a lawn bowls team with any three people (living or dead), who would they be and why? Roger Federer, John Newcomb, Keith Urban.
  8. What is your favourite food and/or drink to order at Lantern Club? Iced coffee, any Asian dishes.
  9. If you were the winner of Lantern Club’s Members Jackpot (currently $18,000), what would you spend it on? A new car.
  10. What is your favourite saying or the best advice that you’ve ever been given? “Be patient, be polite”.

Margaret

  1. Name: Margaret Rosier.
  2. How long have you been bowling? 15 years
  3. How long have you been bowling at Roselands? Four years
  4. How did you start playing lawn bowls? Went down to an open day.
  5. What do you love about playing at Lantern Club? The company.
  6. What is your greatest memory of playing at Roselands? The district triples where we were runners up in district pairs.
  7. What is your favourite food and/or drink to order at Lantern Club? Ice coffee or red wine.

Lynn

  1. Name: Lynn Smith
  2. How long have you been bowling? 36 years
  3. How long have you been bowling at Roselands? 32 years
  4. How did you start playing lawn bowls? My dad offered to coach and pay for me to play. Bowls played during school hours between 10.00am and 2.00pm, enabling me to participate.
  5. What do you love about playing at Lantern Club? Friendship of the lady bowlers.
  6. What is your greatest memory of playing at Roselands? Having a bowls classic named after me. The amount of money raised for me when I represented Australia in World Disability Bowls held in New Zealand.
  7. If you could form a lawn bowls team with any three people (living or dead), who would they be and why? Natasha Scott, number one bowler in Australia. Gwen Wilson, my 100-year-old mum who represented NSW when she was 70. Trudiann Flack, my sister who was runner-up in Australian Singles.
  8. What is your favourite food and/or drink to order at Lantern Club? Flat white coffee.
  9. If you were the winner of Lantern Club’s Members Jackpot (currently $18,000), what would you spend it on? A trip with the family to Broome and in a ship to Darwin.
  10. What is your favourite saying or the best advice that you’ve ever been given? “Be yourself”.

  4. How did you start playing lawn bowls? 1980 when I couldn’t play tennis anymore.
  5. What do you love about playing at Lantern Club? It’s such a friendly club.
  6. What is your greatest memory of playing at Roselands? Winning pairs and the fours.
  7. If you could form a lawn bowls team with any three people (living or dead), who would they be and why? Richard Gere, Clark Gable, Keith Urban.
  8. What is your favourite food and/or drink to order at Lantern Club? Coffee.
  9. If you were the winner of Lantern Club’s Members Jackpot (currently $18,000), what would you spend it on? New carpet and a cruise.

  7. If you could form a lawn bowls team with any three people (living or dead), who would they be and why? My friend Patricia Gosslett, Trudiann Flack my coach and Lynn Smith her sister.

  1. Name: Christine O’Dwyer
  2. How long have you been bowling? 20 years
  3. How long have you been bowling at Roselands? Two years
  4. How did you start playing lawn bowls? Watched night bowls on Friday nights and fell in love with the game.
  5. What do you love about playing at Lantern Club? The ladies. They are just great and friendly.
  6. What is your greatest memory of playing at Roselands? Winning the major singles last year and playing pennant for them.
  7. If you could form a lawn bowls team with any three people (living or dead), who would they be and why? No idea!
  8. What is your favourite food and/or drink to order at Lantern Club? Red wine and pasta.
  9. If you were the winner of Lantern Club’s Members Jackpot (currently $18,000), what would you spend it on? Take my family on a holiday.
  10. What is your favourite saying or the best advice that you’ve ever been given? My favourite saying is “Are you serious?” or “Don’t give up”.

  4. How did you start playing lawn bowls? My husband started first and encouraged me to bowl.
  5. What do you love about playing at Lantern Club? The friendship of the lady bowlers.
  6. What is your greatest memory of playing at Roselands? Playing at Tuncurry in the State Fours.
  7. If you could form a lawn bowls team with any three people (living or dead), who would they be and why? Patrick Swayze for his moves, Michael Clarke for his sporting skills and Prince Harry for his personality.
  8. What is your favourite food and/or drink to order at Lantern Club? Bruschetta and sauvignon blanc

  10. What is your favourite saying or the best advice that you’ve ever been given? “You wouldn’t be dead for quids”.

Val Chard

  4. How did you start playing lawn bowls? Started with my husband when he retired.
  5. What do you love about playing at Lantern Club? Good times with friends.
  6. What is your greatest memory of playing at Roselands? Winning the fours and going to state playoffs.
  7. If you could form a lawn bowls team with any three people (living or dead), who would they be and why? Rock Hudson because he was gorgeous and Martina Navratilova. I can’t think of a third.
  8. What is your favourite food and/or drink to order at Lantern Club? Pizza and sauvignon blanc.

Lawn bowling

  1. Name: Kathy McGrath
  2. How long have you been bowling? Six years.
  3. How long have you been bowling at Roselands? Three years.
  4. How did you start playing lawn bowls? Through friends of someone who used to play at the Diggers Club.
  5. What do you love about playing at Lantern Club? I like meeting new bowlers with similar interests. Everyone is warm and friendly.
  6. What is your greatest memory of playing at Roselands? I am relatively new to Roselands bowling. I prefer being a social player so I just love to have fun.
  7. If you were the winner of Lantern Club’s Members Jackpot (currently $18,000), what would you spend it on? Travel first class around the world until it’s all spent.
  8. What is your favourite saying or the best advice that you’ve ever been given? “Love many. Trust few. Always paddle your own canoe”.
