Mrs Smith received her award at the Bankstown Australia Day Awards ceremony.

The 69-year-old has been recognised not only for her lawn bowls achievements representing NSW at national competitions, but also for her determination after she was diagnosed as a paraplegic almost 10 years ago.

“It’s a huge honour to win sportsperson of the year Award,” Mrs Smith said.

“Sport has been a saviour for me and I’ve had tremendous support from so many people especially the Bankstown people.”

Mrs Smith, who competes in both able bodied and disabled bowls competitions, heads to New Zealand next month to represent Australia in International Bowlers with a Disability World Championships.
