Whether you love to sing and dance, scream and cheer or shop ’til you drop, Sydney has a lot going on this summer. We’ve put together a guide with a plethora of acts, gigs, events and matches coming to our city this December, January and February. There’s something for everyone

SPORTS TO WATCH IN SYDNEY IN SUMMER

SYDNEY KINGS HOME GAMES

Basketball has had a huge resurgence in Australia with a number of Aussie superstars killing it in the NBA in the US such as Ben Simmons, Joe Ingles and Patty Mills. Australia’s local league, the NBL, has seen increased TV and crowd numbers especially Sydney’s Kings thanks to signing former NBA champion Andrew Bogut. For anyone who isn’t a “baller” as such, the basketball is still a great experience compared to our other popular ball sports due to the fact you are so close to the action and the indoor atmosphere is electric.

A LEAGUE SOCCER

While the rugby and Aussie Rules football codes happen in winter, the professional soccer season happens over summer in Australia. With two teams in Sydney (Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers) and one just up the M1 motorway in Gosford (Central Coast Mariners), there will be a game happening in Sydney just about every weekend until the finals in April and May.

BIG BASH LEAGUE

Now in it’s eighth season, the Big Bash League has become one of Australia’s favourite sports leagues to watch live and on TV. Sydney has two teams, the 6ers who play the Sydney Cricket Ground and the western Sydney-based Thunder who play at Spotless Stadium in Sydney Olympic Park. Being just 20 overs (or 120 balls) each, it’s much faster and more exciting for non-cricket purists who don’t have the patience for five day test matches.

LIQUI-MOLY BATHURST 12 HOUR

Bathurst may not technically be in Sydney, but plenty of Sydneysiders venture out to Mt Panorama every October for the famous 1000km Supercars race. But crowds are getting bigger and bigger every year for the other big race on the mountain, the Bathurst 12 Hour which happens on the first weekend of February. As you may have guessed, the race on the Sunday is 12 hours long. The cars are faster and more expensive (think Bentleys, Ferraris, McLarens, Aston Martin etc) than V8 Supercars while many are piloted by the V8 heroes mixed with some of the best drivers from around the world. While you’re there, you can visit the National Motor Racing Museum as well. It’s a great weekend for all petrol heads. For more info, click here.

HSBC SYDNEY 7s RUGBY UNION

The men and women of the Rugby 7s are fast catching the 15-man game for popularity after it was included in the Olympics. The first weekend of February sees some of the best rugby players from all over the world come together for the HSBC Sydney 7s. The games are quick and tries are a plenty. Plus many fans come in fancy dress creating a carnival atmosphere.
