The New South Wales school holidays in 2019 start on 13 April and run until April 29. With Easter public holidays landing on April 19 (Good Friday) and April 22 (Easter Monday) just before ANZAC Day on April 25, there are three extra days to spend with the kids this year. So what is there to do in Sydney this Easter school holidays?

Sydney Royal Easter Show

This year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show has returned to being mostly across the school holidays starting on Friday April 12. So if you haven’t been to the show before, or for a few years, this year is the perfect time to take the kids in the Easter school holidays. Easter weekends are sure to be jam-packed with people again as it’s when most mums and dads don’t have work, but crowds should spread across more work days thanks to the school holiday timing.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory live on stage

Roald Dahl’s delicious tale Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is an absolute classic which has been turned into not one, but two hit films. So the stage production features all the songs, colours and fun you remember from the movies.
If you don’t know the plot of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka opens a mysterious chocolate factory to a lucky few golden ticket winners. Charlie Bucket, a child from a struggling family whose life is a daily struggle, joins other kids on a very interesting adventure.

Star Wars Identity: the Exhibition

Stars Wars fans of all ages will love this exhibition during the 2019 Easter school holidays. It features cool pieces from the Lucasfilm archives including original costumes, props, models and artworks in which you can see up close such as the BB-8, R2-D2, the Millenium Falcon, Yoda from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader’s suit from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and more. You go behind the scenes of the Hollywood blockbuster.
This is all hitting Australia for the first time and you can see it at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney until 10 June.

Autumn Racing Carnival

With the success of Winx, horse racing in Australia has gone back to drawing huge attention and huge crowds. The Sydney Autumn Racing schedule during the school holidays features the Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day on April 13 and the Schweppes All Aged Stakes Day which is the finale of Autumn Racing in Sydney. Kids (under 18s) receive free entry, or perhaps it’s a good day out for mum and dad and leave the kids with the grandparents!

Farmers Markets

Farmers markets have become hugely popular around the entire Sydney landscape. Just about every weekend of the year at least one suburb in Sydney will have a market featuring fresh produce, homemade bits and pieces and some of the yummiest food trucks in the city. Farmers markets always feature something fun for the kids like rides and stalls, but walking them around on a sunny autumn’s day is a great experience alone and great for getting them away from their smartphone and tablet screens.
